Four Thousand Photos and No Stone

This message is for the student with four thousand photographs of dinners and not one record of the week God answered

Four thousand one hundred and eighty one.

That is the number under Photos, and she only knows it because she went looking for something tonight and had to scroll, and scrolling that far past your own life is an experience nobody warns you about.

Forty photographs of the same bowl of pasta, taken from slightly different heights, none of which she has ever sent to anybody. Eleven of a sunset over the ring road, which was, to be fair, a genuinely unbelievable sunset. A screenshot of a train time from a journey she cannot now place. Three of a dog that has never been hers. A whole burst of a birthday cake being carried through a dark room, and she cannot immediately remember whose.

It goes back four years like that. Dinners, mostly. Her life, as filed, is dinners.

And what she was actually looking for was February of second year.

Because there was a week in that February. She had four viewings fall through, and the third one fell through by text at ten at night while she was in the launderette on the corner doing a wash she had already put off for a fortnight. She sat on the plastic chair with the machine going round and said one sentence to God. It was not a good sentence. It had the word please in it three times and it was mostly about not wanting to ring her mum.

On the Thursday a room came up. Somebody had pulled out of a house she had never heard of, and the girl who messaged her about it is now one of the four people in the world she would ring at three in the morning, and the whole shape of the two years since came out of that Thursday.

There is not one photograph. Not of the launderette, not of the Thursday, not of the door of that house, not of the four of them the first night. Zero, out of four thousand one hundred and eighty one.

Nobody photographs a launderette. That is what she keeps thinking. Nobody photographs the moment before, because you do not know yet, and nobody photographs the moment after, because you are too busy living in it.

So she has an enormous archive of her own dinners, and no record whatsoever of the only week that changed anything.

Four Thousand Photos and No Stone

The first thing God asked for afterwards was manual labor

A nation crosses a river that has been stopped in front of them. Enormous. The kind of thing you would expect to be followed by singing.

And the first instruction afterwards is not singing. It is heavy lifting, and it is oddly specific.

That this may be a sign among you, so that when your children ask in time to come, What do these stones mean to you? then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD.Joshua 4:6-7

Twelve men. One stone each. Out of the middle of the riverbed, which means bending down in a place they had just been walking through on dry ground, which means getting their hands wet and muddy on the way out of a miracle. Carry them. Put them down in the place where you sleep tonight.

He asked for objects. Not a song, though the songs came, and not a feeling. Twelve rocks, in a pile, at Gilgal, where people would keep tripping over them for generations.

So hear this over you before we go further. You are not a person with nothing to mark, and you were never disqualified from this by having a quiet life. Scripture has God asking for twelve ordinary rocks out of a riverbed rather than something impressive, and the Holy Spirit is the One who has kept your February from washing away while you were busy filing dinners.

An archive is not a marker

Here is the distinction that has been missing, and it is not a small one.

What you carry in your pocket is an archive. It is very good. It holds four thousand items, it is searchable, it is backed up in two places, and it will outlive your phone. And an archive has one behavior: it waits to be asked. It surfaces nothing on its own. Nobody in the history of the world has ever opened a photo library to be reminded of something they had forgotten to look for.

A marker behaves in the opposite direction. A marker holds exactly one thing and it comes and finds you. Twelve rocks in a pile at Gilgal were not searchable and did not need to be. They were in the way. A child walked past them and asked, and the asking was the design.

That is why the launderette is missing. You never failed to record February; you recorded it the way you record everything, which is not at all, because a camera roll only catches what you thought to point it at, and nobody points anything at a plastic chair.

You have permission to build a marker tonight, and it costs nothing and requires no talent. Joshua 4:7 is where the instruction sits, and the Spirit of God is the One who turns a line of your own handwriting into something that speaks when you are not expecting it.

It is allowed to be small

Now the part that stops most people, and I want to take it away from you completely.

There has been a comparison running. Somewhere in you a bar exists, and a room falling into your lap in February does not clear it, because there was no diagnosis and no courtroom and nothing anybody would repeat.

Look at what was actually carried out of that river. Rocks. Not gold, not tablets, not anything anybody would have looked at twice on a normal day. God chose the most ordinary object on the site and made it the memorial, and the ordinariness is doing real work: a monument you cannot afford to build is a monument that does not get built.

So write the small one. A room, a Thursday, a person who messaged you. If you think it might have been a coincidence, write it anyway and let it argue its own case in ten years. What is yours to mark is already yours and no bar was ever set at the door, because Scripture put twelve riverbed rocks at the center of Israel's memory, and the Holy Spirit is not running the comparison you have been running.

The breakthrough

Nothing was lost. That is the thing to notice before you get up.

You came in assuming there was a gap in your life where the record should be, and there is no gap. There is a February, and it is intact, and you retold it just now in detail, down to the plastic chair and the word please. Nothing has been waiting on you to be more organized. What has been missing is not the memory. It is the pile at Gilgal.

You have this to write and you have had it the whole time. Joshua 4:7 gives the instruction, the Holy Spirit has kept the week whole for four years, and the pen is the only part that was ever yours.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the pen in your hand. You are not speaking them because your life has finally produced something worth marking. Christ is in you and this standing was given to you, and the right to keep a record of God's own doing comes from His authority, not from the size of the entry. Whatever He does next is His to decide, in His own way, and this line makes no claim on it. Speak first to the camera roll, then to what its emptiness has been telling you about yourself, then to God.

  1. Camera roll of four thousand dinners, you were never the record of what God did. Joshua 4:7 asked for rocks out of a riverbed and not for anything photogenic, and the Holy Spirit has kept my February whole while you were busy filing pasta.
  2. Feeling that mine was too small to keep, get out in the name of Jesus. God picked the plainest objects on the site and made them the memorial, His word says so in Joshua 4, and His Spirit is putting a launderette and a Thursday in front of me as things worth writing down.
  3. God, You did it and I am the one who never wrote it down, and You kept it anyway. I am writing the line tonight with the month on it and putting it where I will trip over it, and Your Holy Spirit is what turns four words in my own handwriting into a thing that speaks.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
