They put the trestle tables end to end for the anniversary supper, the way they always do, and somewhere around the pudding somebody asks her to tell it.
She never has to be asked twice. It is the story. Everybody in that hall knows there is a story and most of them have heard it, and the ones who have heard it want it again, because a hall full of people who have known each other thirty years is not listening for information.
So she tells it.
The washing machine had gone. Not broken in a way a man could fix; gone, water across the kitchen floor, three children under nine and a basket that never got below the top. No money for another one, not that week, not that month. And she had prayed about it, standing in the wet, feeling ridiculous, because you do not pray about washing machines.
And on the Tuesday a neighbor she barely knew, a man from four doors down whose name she was not certain of, came up the path with a washing machine on a sack trolley. His mother had died and the house was being cleared and the machine was three years old and did he know anybody. And she stood in the door with her hands wet and could not speak.
The hall loves it. They always love it. Somebody says amen at the end the way you do at a supper, and the plates start moving again, and her son drives her home.
In the car he is quiet for a bit. He is twenty-six and he loves her and he is not trying to catch her out.
Then he says: you said February tonight.
She says yes.
He says: at Christmas you said it was just after Easter. And you said his name was Roy. Tonight you said Ray. And when Auntie Pat was over you said the machine was nearly new, and tonight it was three years old.
She looks out of the window at the ring road.
And here is the thing she cannot say out loud in that car, because it would come out sounding like the beginning of a confession: she does not know which one is right. Not one detail of it. She could not tell you the month. She has told that story upwards of forty times over the years and it has changed a little every single time, the way a photocopy of a photocopy changes, and there is no original anywhere.
The machine came. God did it. She would go to the stake on that.
She simply never wrote a word of it down, on the day, when she still knew.

Drift is not lying
The first thing I want to take off this woman, before anything else happens, is the suspicion that she has been embroidering.
She has not. That is not what has been going on in that hall.
Memory does not work like a filing cabinet, whatever we all assume. It works more like a story that gets retold: every time you bring it up, you rebuild it, and you put it back slightly changed, and the next time you reach for it you reach for the rebuilt one. Forty tellings is forty rebuilds. The month softened, the name slid one letter, the machine aged three years in one direction and got younger in another, and at no point did she decide anything or add anything on purpose.
That is not dishonesty. It is what an undated memory does, and it does it to everybody, and it has been doing it to your best story too.
You are not a liar and nothing you have told anybody has been counted against you. Scripture says God knows our frame and remembers that we are dust, which is a sentence about limits and not about faults, and the Holy Spirit has not been keeping a list of the versions.
The word of their testimony
Here is the verse this category stands on, and I want to be exact about which half of it I have been asked to open.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.Revelation 12:11
There are two things named there. The first is the ground everything else stands on, and it is not the part this page is for; other rooms in this house handle it and handle it properly. The second is the one this category exists for, and I want you to hear the exact wording.
Not the testimony. The word of their testimony.
A testimony that never becomes a word is a memory, and a memory is a private thing that lives inside one head and drifts quietly for forty years. A word is a thing with a shape. It can be said in the same terms twice. It can be handed to somebody who was not there. It can be read out at a table by a person who was not born when it happened, and it will say the same thing it said the first time.
Right now, as you read this, what God did in your house is already His work and already finished, and none of it depends on you having the month. But the word of it, the sayable, handable, unchanging version, is a thing you can still make tonight. Revelation 12:11 puts real weight on that word, and the Holy Spirit is well able to bring the day back up while you sit with a pen.
Small, dated, and enough
Now, before you go looking for something impressive to write down, let me stop you at the door.
She has spent years slightly apologizing for that story. You could hear it in the hall, in the way she set it up. It is only a washing machine. It is not a miracle like the ones people stand up and tell. And every single person listening loved it, and none of them thought it was small, and she could not hear that from where she was standing.
A washing machine on a sack trolley, up a path, on a Tuesday, in a week when there was no money, brought by a man whose name she still cannot get right. That is a dated, ordinary, particular thing that God did. It is a stone. Put it on the pile.
The entries do not have to be dramatic and they were never meant to be. Read what Joshua told them to say when the children asked about the twelve stones out of the riverbed: these are because the water stopped. Not because the sky opened. Because the water stopped, on a day, and we came across.
You have plenty. That is the truth about you and it is not flattery: your life is thick with small, dated, particular things and almost none of them were written down. His word calls those the word of a testimony and does not grade them by size, and the Holy Spirit is the One who brings things to remembrance, and He is not short of material in your house.
So here is where this has actually landed, and it is a better place than the car on the ring road.
Nothing that happened has been lost. God did it, and it happened on a real day, and the day exists whether or not you can name it, and there is not a person in heaven confused about the month. The drift has cost you no ground with Him at all.
What the drift has cost is your ability to hand it over cleanly. And that is fixable in about four minutes, starting tonight, with the next one and with as much of this one as you can still honestly recover.
You are the keeper of a real record and always were, and Scripture puts genuine weight on the word of a testimony rather than on the size of it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who will bring the details back up as far as they are still there. What you cannot recover, leave out. A record with a gap in it is worth ten retellings that have quietly filled the gap in.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with the pen in your hand. The right to speak like this is not earned by having a tidy memory; it is yours in Christ, given to you, and the authority in these lines is His authority, not a certainty you have to feel first, with the Holy Spirit in you as the seal on it. So speak to the story that has drifted, then to the suspicion that has been following it around, then to God, and whatever He does next in this house is His to decide, in His own timing.
- Story I have told forty ways, you are not lost and you are not a lie. Revelation 12:11 says they overcame by the word of their testimony, and a word is a thing with a shape, so you are getting one tonight. God did it on a real day, and the day did not stop existing because I mislaid the month.
- Suspicion that I embroidered it, get out of this car in the name of Jesus. Scripture says He knows my frame and remembers that I am dust, so the drift is a limit and never a fault, and the Holy Spirit has not been keeping a list of my versions. I am writing the next one down on the day.
- Lord, You came up that path on a Tuesday and You have never needed my filing to be good before You moved. You have kept every day I lost track of. I am putting one of them on paper tonight, with a date, somewhere my grandchildren will find it.
