A New LinePsalm 145:4

The Niece Who Is Watching

This message is for the woman standing first in her line while a fifteen year old niece watches exactly how she does it

The girl is fifteen and has been staying since Thursday, and on the whole it is going well.

She is funny. She is on her phone more than anybody has ever been on a phone. She has strong views about the way her aunt loads a dishwasher and she has aired all of them. She sleeps until half past ten and then comes down and eats an amount of cereal that would frighten you.

Saturday morning, and her aunt is at the counter with a tea towel over one shoulder, half turned away, doing something with the toaster.

And in the reflection of the kitchen window she catches it.

The girl has the bowl in front of her and her spoon already in her hand, and she is not eating. She is waiting. And when her aunt turns round and says the thing she always says over food, the girl's lips are moving with it. Not out loud. Under her breath, half a beat behind, the way you sing along to a song you would deny knowing.

Her aunt keeps her face still, gets the toast out, and sits down, and her hands are not entirely steady.

Because here is what that girl is mouthing along to. It is not a family grace. There is no family grace. It is nineteen words this woman put together herself, at this table, eight years ago, on an evening when she wanted to say something over her food and realized there was nobody alive she could ring up to ask what you are supposed to say.

She is the first one. That is the plain fact of her life and she has never once made a fuss about it.

Her people are good people. Her mother is the funniest woman in three postcodes and would take the coat off her own back for a stranger at a bus stop. Her aunties fed half the street through a bad winter. There is nothing in that family to be ashamed of and she will not have a word said against any of them.

There was simply never any of this in it. No one at that table with their eyes shut. No one who could tell her what to do the night her friend's boy went into hospital, no one to show her how to open a Bible, nobody in the whole line to say, this is how we do it.

So she made it up. All of it. Out of watching other people at church and getting it slightly wrong and being too proud to ask twice. The grace at the table. The way she prays in the car. The way she stops and says something before a hard phone call. Nineteen words, and a habit of putting her hand flat on the table first, which she is fairly sure she copied off a woman she has not seen in a decade.

And now there is a fifteen year old mouthing it along under her breath in her kitchen.

Which means it is not a private arrangement any more. It is a form. It is being handed on. And the fear that arrives with the toast, and lands in her stomach like a stone, is one she has never had words for until this second.

I am the template. And nobody ever gave me one.

You are somewhere in that kitchen. First in your line, no one to ask, making it up as honestly as you know how, and somebody younger has started copying you.

The Niece Who Is Watching

The psalm assumes a chain, and you thought that ruled you out

Here is the verse that has been quietly wounding you for years without you noticing which verse it was.

One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts.Psalm 145:4

Read it as a woman with nobody behind her and it sounds like a family photograph with no place in it for you. One generation hands it to the next. Grandmother to mother to daughter, all the way down, and you standing at the side of the picture holding nineteen words you wrote yourself.

But look at what the verse actually requires. It requires two generations and a handing. It does not require a third one behind the first, and it never once says where the chain started or who was standing there when it did.

Every chain in the history of the world has a first link. And a first link is not a broken middle link, whatever it feels like from the inside on a Saturday morning.

So take this before you take anything else off me. You are not standing outside Psalm 145:4, you are standing inside it at the top, and you were put there rather than left there. Scripture puts the handing on and not the inheriting at the center of that verse, and the Holy Spirit is the One who has kept your hands steady enough to hand anything at all with nobody in front of you to copy.

Name what was absent, and then look at what He gave

I am not going to tell you nothing was missing. That would be a lie and you would know it, and this site does not do that.

Something was absent. Nobody taught you. There was no shoulder to look over, and the years since have gone the hard way, checking yourself against strangers, quietly certain that everybody else got a manual you never received.

Now hear what God has actually put in that space, which is not a consolation and is not a substitute.

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. God setteth the solitary in families.Psalm 68:5-6

He does not merely feel sorry about a gap. He steps into the vacancy Himself, by title. And He does the other thing in the same breath, which is to put the person with no household into one. You did not walk into that church out of nowhere and improvise alone in a vacuum. He seated you.

You have been fathered in the exact place you had nobody, and you were being taught the whole time you thought you were guessing. Psalm 68:5 gives God that title in His own words, and the Holy Spirit whom Jesus called the One who teaches you all things has been the instructor at that kitchen table for eight years, on evenings when you thought you were making it up alone.

Nineteen words are not a poor copy of anything

Now the fear about the template, because it deserves a straight answer and not a compliment.

The fear is that the girl is copying something defective. That she is learning a version of this with your mistakes baked into it, and that she will eventually find out real Christians do it some other way, and that the thing you handed her will embarrass her.

Read Psalm 145:4 again and notice what is being handed. Not a form of words. Not a posture, not the hand flat on the table, not nineteen words in any particular order. His works. His mighty acts. What He has done, declared by somebody who saw it.

The girl is not copying a technique. She is copying a woman who is being watched by God, and the content of what she is receiving is not your wording, it is that this is a house where God gets spoken to before the cereal.

You have already handed over the only thing the verse asks for, and you have been doing it since long before Thursday. Scripture puts the declaring of His acts at the center of it, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes a handing on out of a habit that a fifteen year old could otherwise have written off as a quirk.

The breakthrough

Nobody in your family is on trial this morning. Put that down. Your mother is still the funniest woman in three postcodes and none of what has been said touches her.

What has changed is where you thought you were standing. You are not a woman with a gap behind her improvising in front of a child. You are the first link in something, and you were placed there by God rather than left there by anybody, and Psalm 145:4 has a job for exactly one person in your family and it turns out to be you.

The Holy Spirit is not asking you to become the kind of woman who was raised in it. That woman was never on the table. He is asking you to keep saying nineteen words out loud in a kitchen where somebody is listening.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing up in the kitchen, and let the girl hear if she is in. Your right to speak like this was not handed down to you by anybody, and it did not need to be: you are in Christ, and that standing was given to you the day you came in, not earned across generations, and the Spirit who inspired Psalm 145:4 is what makes these words more than a good intention. Speak to the nineteen words first, then to the thing that landed in your stomach with the toast, then to God, and whatever He does with that girl is His to decide, in His own way.

  1. Words I made up over that table, you are not second best to an inherited form. Psalm 145:4 asks for His mighty acts declared from one generation to the next and never once specifies the wording, and there is a fifteen year old mouthing you along under her breath. You are getting said out loud again tonight, hand flat on the table and all.
  2. Shame of having nobody to ask, go from this house in the name of Jesus. Psalm 68:5 calls God a father of the fatherless who sets the solitary in families, so what was never in my hands to inherit was supplied by the One who has not been absent for a day. His Spirit has been the teacher at this table for eight years and I was not guessing after all.
  3. Lord, You were standing in this line before I was, so I am not the first one in it after all. Your word says in Psalm 145:4 that one generation declares Your mighty acts to the next, and Your Holy Spirit is teaching me and that girl at the same table and at the same speed. I am naming myself out loud as the one standing in it, and I am naming her as the one it is standing for.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
