What He SworeHebrews 7:21

The Chair Is Not the Oath

This message is for the woman who prays best in one chair and has quietly begun to believe the chair is what God answers

The chair came from a house clearance twelve years ago and it was ugly then. Brown, high backed, a bit stiff in the seat. It sits in the corner of the front room where the light comes over her left shoulder from about seven, and the left arm has gone pale in one oval patch, because that is where her hand rests when she prays and twelve years of a hand will lift the color out of anything.

Half six every morning. Kettle, mug, chair, the small light on. She is not sentimental about it. If you had asked her she would have laughed and said it is only a chair.

Then her son and his wife had six weeks between houses, and the front room became a bedroom, and the chair went into the garage under an old dust sheet with the boxes of Christmas things.

The first morning she sat at the kitchen table. It was fine. Chilly. The second morning she tried the top of the stairs, which sounds odd but the light is good there. By the end of the first week she had stopped getting up at half six, because what was the point, and by the end of the second she noticed that she had not really prayed at all, not properly, not the way she does it, and the noticing gave her a small cold feeling in the middle of her chest.

Here is the moment. Saturday, twenty past six, still dark. She is standing in her dressing gown at the door of the garage with a mug in her hand, and she has come out here to see if she could just sit in it for ten minutes, sheet and boxes and all, and she catches sight of herself in the black glass of the back door.

A woman at a garage door at twenty past six because she thinks that is where God is.

She did not think it in words before that. Nobody does. It builds a millimetre at a time, out of good things: a place that worked, a habit that helped, a light that fell right, a hand on an arm rest. And somewhere in there the arrangement quietly stopped being the place where she meets God and started being the reason He turns up. She would have denied that flatly a month ago. She cannot deny it standing at a garage door in the dark.

And underneath it, where she does not look often, a colder question. If the chair is what He answers, then what happens when the chair goes for good? When it is a hospital, or a spare room in somebody else's house, or a life that no longer has a corner in it with the light coming over the left shoulder at seven?

What exactly does she have then?

The Chair Is Not the Oath

The day the priesthood got an oath

Hebrews is arguing about priests, and it makes one point that lands directly on a woman at a garage door.

The old priesthood, the writer says, ran on descent and ceremony and arrangements. Sons of Aaron, born into it, made priests without an oath. It worked, it was given by God, and it was administrative. Nobody swore anything.

Then he quotes a line out of Psalm 110 about a different priest altogether, and the whole weight of the letter comes down on four words.

The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.Hebrews 7:21

Sware. Will not repent, which in that older English does not mean sorry, it means change His mind. God took an oath about His own Son, and the oath is the point: not a system, not a lineage, not a room. Your way in was established by God swearing to Himself about Jesus, and it was finished before you owned a chair.

You have access that was sworn, and you were not the one who signed it. I am not offering you my own reassurance here: Hebrews 7:21 puts the oath in God's mouth, not yours, and the Holy Spirit is the One making that land in you at the exact spot where you have been quietly negotiating with your own furniture. Nothing about your way in is administrative. It was sworn.

A chair is a kindness, and it was never a condition

Now hear me carefully, because this is where people overcorrect and throw out something good.

The chair is not the problem. God is not offended by a corner and a lamp. He made bodies that settle into habits, and He gave His people places, and there is nothing holy about praying somewhere uncomfortable on purpose. Keep the chair. Sit in it tomorrow.

The trouble is not the chair. It is the sentence that grew underneath it without being said out loud: this is what He answers.

That sentence is small and it is enormous, because it turns an oath into an arrangement. And an arrangement always has terms, and terms always have a clause about you, and once there is a clause about you then somewhere in the small print is the thought that a bad month or a moved chair puts you outside. That thought has been making people miserable for a very long time and it is not in the text.

For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.Hebrews 6:16

Right now, as you read, the strife about whether you are in is over, and it was ended by an oath rather than by your consistency. That is written, and it was written centuries before your habits formed, and His Spirit is not waiting to see whether you get back to half six before He makes it true in you. It is already true. The habit was always a kindness to you and never a term against you.

He swore, and there is nothing in it about your arrangements

Read the sworn line again and look for yourself in it. Thou art a priest for ever. Not you are a priest if. Not while the room stays the same. Scripture leaves your side of it out on purpose, and the Holy Spirit has never once put it back in.

The oath is entirely about Jesus and that is precisely why it holds for you. If any part of it were about your side, then your side would be where it could fail, and God did not build it that way. He swore it about His Son and then He put you in His Son, and that is the whole architecture.

You are inside a sworn thing, and it was sworn about somebody who does not move. His word says God cannot lie and confirmed it with an oath, in Hebrews 6:18, and the Holy Spirit brings that up in a person at a garage door precisely because that is the hour it is needed. The oath does not know where you are sitting.

The breakthrough

So go and get the chair back when the six weeks are up. Sit in it. Enjoy it. Let your hand go back on the pale patch.

And know what it is: a good chair, in a good corner, with good light, and no load on it at all.

The weight you have been putting on your arrangements was never yours to carry, and it is already lifted off you. Scripture says He remains faithful even when we are faithless, because He cannot deny Himself, and the Spirit who wrote that line through Paul is not adjusting His posture toward you based on where you sat this morning.

Declare this over yourself

You are not speaking these because your prayer life is in good order this month. The right to speak them belongs to you in Christ, and it was given to you rather than built by you. What He does in answer is His to decide and He answers as He chooses, so say them and leave the outcome with Him.

  1. Empty chair under a sheet, you are not the reason God ever listened to me. Hebrews 7:21 says the Lord swore and will not change His mind, and He swore it about His own Son and not about my furniture. I am praying standing up in a hallway, and I am heard.
  2. Fear that God answers a chair, you have no claim to stay in a woman He swore about. Scripture says an oath ends all argument, and the Holy Spirit is settling that argument in me this morning instead of next year. My way in was sworn, and it does not come apart in a garage.
  3. Lord, You swore and You do not change Your mind, and You did it in Your own name because there was nobody greater to swear by. In the name of Jesus I take my hand off the arm of that chair and put it on Your oath, where it belongs. You are my priest for ever, and I am praying to You right here, with the kettle on.
