What He SworeMicah 7:20

The Ledger That Was Never the Oath

This message is for the man who keeps a private ledger of his own spiritual performance and reads the balance as God's mood

He runs the same loop every morning. Out of the gate, down past the postbox, left along the railings, twice round the park, home. Six years of it. He could do it asleep and on some Mondays very nearly does.

And while he runs, without ever having decided to, he does the tally.

It goes like this. Prayed this morning, yes, though it was short and half of it was the shopping. Read the chapter, no, second day running. Snapped at the boy about the trainers, and the boy did not deserve it, and that is a mark against. Gave the man outside the shop the change in his pocket, mark for. Thought about the thing he does not tell anybody he thinks about, mark against, heavy one. Rang his mother, mark for.

By the corner of the park, where the path goes under the beeches and the light comes through in bars, he has a total. He has never written a single figure of it down. That is what has kept it invisible for six years. But he has it, as clearly as if it were printed, and it tells him what kind of standing he has with God today.

And this morning the total is good.

Unusually good, actually. It has been a decent stretch. The reading has held for a fortnight, he has been patient in a house that has not made it easy, and yesterday he did something quietly generous that nobody knows about and nobody will. He comes under the beeches with the light going past him in bars and he feels, in his chest, that God is pleased with him. Not thinks it. Feels it, the way you feel warm weather.

He is most of the way round the second lap before the other end of the thought arrives, and it arrives like a stone in the shoe.

If today's warmth is the total, then every cold morning was the total too.

Every flat, gray, God-feels-far morning of the last six years, when he assumed he was going through a dry patch and prayed about it and waited for it to lift. Those were not dry patches. Those were the ledger being read back to him in his own handwriting. He has been standing in front of a mirror for six years, doing arithmetic, and calling the answer God's face.

He stops at the gate. The dog next door starts up. And the question that arrives is not a religious question at all, it is a plain one: whose opinion have I actually been receiving every morning?

Perhaps you keep one too. Nobody keeps it on paper. It is kept in the chest, and consulted about four times a day, and it decides how bold you are in prayer and whether you feel welcome or merely tolerated in the room.

The Ledger That Was Never the Oath

The last sentence of a very hard book

Micah spends seven chapters describing a nation whose ledger, if anyone kept one, was catastrophic. Bribes at the gate. Judges for sale. Prophets telling people whatever they had already decided. It is not a gentle book and it does not pretend the trouble is imaginary.

And then it ends. And this is the last sentence.

You will show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.Micah 7:20

Read where the sentence puts its weight, and let His Spirit hold you there a moment. Not on Jacob's conduct. Not on the current generation, who have just had seven chapters of it. The reason given for the faithfulness is a swearing, and the swearing happened in the days of old, to fathers who were dust long before Micah was born.

That is what an oath is. A promise says what I intend. An oath stakes the swearer's own name and standing on the thing being said, and it does not go back out for revision when the other party has a bad year. God swore. To Abraham, to Isaac, to Jacob. Hebrews notes that when God made His promise to Abraham, there was nobody greater for Him to swear by, so He swore by Himself, and it calls the promise and the oath two unchangeable things.

Two unchangeable things. Not two conditional things. Nothing in Micah's last sentence is waiting to see how the reader's fortnight goes.

Take that personally, because it is meant personally. You are inside an oath older than your arithmetic, and the swearing was finished before you existed to be measured. Micah 7:20 grounds the whole thing in what God did in the days of old, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that sentence out of a bitter little book and lays it on a man standing at his own gate with the dog barking.

An oath does not have terms

Here is the thing a ledger keeper will resist hardest, so let me put it plainly and only once.

There is no clause. Look for the conditions in Micah 7:20 and you will not find them, because the sentence names no condition, and the reason it names none is that the swearing was not a transaction. God did not agree to be faithful in exchange for something. He swore faithfulness, by Himself, to people who could not have held up any end of anything, and He has never once put it back out to tender.

This is where a careful man usually reaches for the obvious objection: then does what I do not matter at all? It matters enormously. It matters to your children, to your own peace, to every person who has to live near you. But it is not what is holding the oath up, and it never was, and reading the two as the same thing is precisely what has been running your mornings.

Your obedience is a response to a settled thing. It is not the hinge the settled thing swings on.

So hear it turned toward you: this is yours already, not on order and not on approval. Scripture calls the oath and the promise two unchangeable things, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on that in a believer, which means the warmth you felt under the beech trees was not a payment and the gray mornings were not a withdrawal.

Why the total feels so exactly like God

A tally does not feel like arithmetic. It feels like weather, and weather feels like it comes from the sky.

That is why this runs for years without being noticed. Nobody sits down and decides that God's disposition tracks their week. It is simply that a person who is disappointed with himself will feel a coldness, and there is nothing else in the room to attribute the coldness to, so it gets attributed upward. The tally is silent, it never argues, and it always sounds like a verdict rather than an opinion.

The cure is not to feel differently. Feelings are not commanded and cannot be summoned to order. The cure is that a sworn word is louder than a felt one when it is actually spoken out loud, and most people have never once said God's oath aloud with themselves in it.

You have a word older and steadier than this morning's weather, and it is written, so it can be read out even on a day when nothing in you agrees with it. Micah 7:20 was sworn in the days of old and set down in a book, and His Spirit is the one who makes a sentence on a page land in a chest.

The breakthrough

So the total goes back to being what it always was, which is a record of a week. Useful. Honest. Sometimes bracing. Never a message from heaven, and never entitled to speak in that voice again.

And what stands where the total used to stand is a sworn word. Micah 7:20 says He does it because He swore it in the days of old, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that sentence do its work in you rather than sit in a page. So the ground under this morning is not how this morning went. It is an oath, and it was already old when Micah wrote it down.

You are held by the oath and not by the total, right now, as you read this, and you were held by it on every morning the figure went the wrong way. Micah 7:20 says He performs the truth He swore to the fathers, and the Holy Spirit is what carries a sentence that old into an ordinary Tuesday and makes it bear the weight of the day.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing, with the verse where you can see it. The right to speak like this was never earned by a good fortnight: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and the Spirit who seals it is the whole of the floor. So speak first to the total, then to what the total has been telling you about yourself, then to God, and however He answers the week in front of you is His to decide.

  1. Morning tally, you are not God's face and you never have been. Micah 7:20 says He swore it to the fathers in the days of old, so the oath was standing centuries before my arithmetic started, and I am reading it now instead of you.
  2. Balance I keep reading as His mood, get out of my mornings in the name of Jesus. God swore by Himself because there was no one greater to swear by, and Scripture calls the promise and the oath two unchangeable things. His Spirit is the one holding that steady in me on the weeks I cannot hold anything at all.
  3. Father, You swore this in the days of old and You have never once put it out for revision. I am reading Your oath out loud this morning instead of my own total. Your Holy Spirit makes it more than ink in me, and however this week runs, the swearing is done.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
