Useful Weeks and the Other Kind

The corkboard by the kitchen hatch has been there longer than anyone in the building, and it holds exactly one thing that matters: the rota.

Laminated. A grid, four columns, thirteen rows, one quarter of the year. Names in marker pen in the boxes. Setting up, serving, washing, lock up. It is the most read document in that church, and nobody would ever say so.

She has been in the Tuesday boxes for eleven years.

And there is a thing that happens to her prayers depending on that grid, which she has never told a living soul, because saying it out loud would make it sound like a superstition, and she is not superstitious, she is a sensible woman who has read her Bible right through twice.

On the weeks her name is in a box, she prays like a daughter. Big prayers. Bold ones. Asks God for things she has no business asking for and does not apologize for asking. Stands in the kitchen with her hands in the sink and talks to Him the whole time she is scrubbing the big pot, easy, familiar, the way you talk to someone whose kitchen you are also welcome in.

On the weeks her name is not in a box, she prays like a lodger. Careful. Grateful. Short. She thanks Him for things. She does not ask for much. There is a politeness that comes into it, and a distance, and she would tell you that this is reverence, and it is not reverence, and somewhere underneath she knows it.

The new quarter goes up on a Sunday.

She is putting her coat on in the corridor and she stops at the board the way everyone does, and she reads down the Tuesdays, and her name is not there.

It takes her a second. Then she sees the note at the bottom in the coordinator's handwriting, and it is the kindest note anybody has written her all year. They have taken her off for a quarter. Her mother has been ill since February and the woman who runs the rota has eyes in her head and a heart in her chest, and it says, in so many words, rest, we have got this, come back in the spring.

And she stands there in the corridor with one arm in her coat and she feels, unmistakably, God take a step backwards.

Not because He did. She knows perfectly well He did not. She could quote you four verses on that in the corridor, that minute, without opening anything.

But the feeling is there and the feeling is enormous, and what it says is this: you were useful and now you are not, and He was fond of you and now He is putting up with you, and the arrangement has always been the boxes on the board.

The ledger nobody asked her to keep

Somewhere along the way she started keeping accounts, and God never issued the ledger.

It is a good ledger, as these things go. It has real entries in it. Eleven years of Tuesdays is not nothing, and I am not going to be clever about it, because the soup was real and the people were fed and heaven has a longer memory for that than the corkboard does.

The trouble is not the serving. The trouble is what she has quietly made the serving mean. She has been reading her own usefulness as the temperature of the relationship. Useful week, warm God. Quiet week, God at arm's length, courteous, waiting for her to become interesting again.

And this is the thing about that arrangement: it is a contract. She would never use the word. She has heard a hundred sermons against it and agreed with every one. But she has been living inside terms, and terms is not what she was brought into.

You were brought into an oath. Not a rota, not an arrangement, not a probation you renew each quarter with good works. Psalm 105:8 says God remembered His covenant for ever, and for ever has no busy season in it, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at the board checking whether you are on this quarter before He comes near you.

He remembered it. That is the verb.

Here is the passage, and I want you to notice who is doing all the work in it.

He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant.Psalm 105:8-10

Every verb in those three verses belongs to God. He remembered. He commanded. He made. He swore. He confirmed. There is not one thing in that sentence that Abraham does, and Abraham is the man it is about.

That is not an accident of translation, it is the whole architecture of the thing. An oath is a one-sided instrument. When a man swears, he binds himself; the person he swears to does not become responsible for the swearing. And when the psalm wants to tell you why Israel was still standing after centuries of being a nation that lost the plot at regular intervals, it does not say they held up their end. It says He remembered.

So take the weight off. Right now, as you read, the covenant you are standing in is being kept by the One who swore it, exactly as Psalm 105:8 says, and it has never once been held up by your Tuesdays. The Holy Spirit is in you as the guarantee on all of it, and He did not arrive on a good week and He does not leave on a quiet one.

Confirmed to Jacob, of all people

And then there is verse ten, which is the mercy hidden in the middle of this psalm, and I do not want you to walk past it.

Made with Abraham. Sworn to Isaac. And confirmed to Jacob.

Jacob. The one who came out holding a heel and spent the next forty years living up to it. The one who bought his brother's birthright off him with a bowl of stew when the man came in starving. The one who put on his brother's clothes and lied to his blind father's face. The one who ran, and who kept running, and who was still bargaining with God at a stone pillar in the dark with the words if You will do this, then You will be my God.

That is who God confirmed it to. Not adjusted for. Not offered a lesser version of. Confirmed, the psalm says, for a law, which is the strongest word in the sentence.

Nobody looking at Jacob's file would have called him a useful week. He was the schemer of the family and everybody knew it, and God said the same oath over him that He said over his grandfather, in the same terms, with nothing trimmed off the end.

You have not been graded down in a quiet quarter. His word stands over you in the same terms it stood over you when you were on every rota in that building, because Scripture says it was confirmed to a man whose record was worse than yours on his best day, and the Spirit is the One holding it in place while you rest.
